How Business Electricity Is Calculated

Understanding how your business electricity costs are calculated helps you take control of your energy spend — and see where real savings can be made.

Business electricity bills are based on how much power your company uses, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The more energy you consume, the higher your total cost — but there are a few key components that make up your final bill:

1. Unit Rate (Price per kWh)

This is the amount you pay for each unit of electricity you use. It varies depending on your supplier, contract length, consumption level, and whether you’re on a fixed or variable tariff. Larger users often get better rates because they consume more energy.

2. Standing Charge

A fixed daily fee that covers the cost of supplying electricity to your premises — things like meter maintenance, network costs, and administration. Even if you use no power for a day, the standing charge still applies.

3. Contract Length and Type

Business contracts typically last from 1 to 3 years. Longer-term deals often lock in lower rates, while shorter contracts offer flexibility but may expose you to market price changes.

4. Meter Type and Usage Pattern

Businesses with half-hourly meters (higher users) are billed based on accurate readings every 30 minutes. Smaller businesses usually have standard meters and are billed based on estimated or manual readings. Peak-time usage can also impact your effective cost.

5. Taxes and Levies

Your bill includes government-mandated charges like VAT (usually 20%) and the Climate Change Levy (CCL) — though some small or charitable organisations may qualify for exemptions or reductions.

At Aurum Energy, we analyse all these factors for you — comparing multiple suppliers and negotiating the best deal based on your actual usage and meter profile.
